My time with MIPS the company has reached its end, and so at best I'll
have little time spend on maintaining arch/mips/. Reflect that in
MAINTAINERS by changing status to Odd Fixes. Hopefully this might spur
the involvement of someone with more time, but even if not it should
help serve to avoid unrealistic expectations.

Maybe Ralf's T: entry should be removed too.

Hi, all,

I suggest Jiaxun Yang to be the new Linux/MIPS maintainer because of
the following reasons:

1. He is familiar with Linux kernel & MIPS architecture.
2. He is active and has already contributed many patches.
3. He is not an employee of any corporation, so people can expect him
to be neutral.
4. He is young and has enough free time to follow the mainstream
development closely.
5. His English is good and is willing to maintain a good level of
communication with other contributors.

Jiaxun, what's your opinion?

Regards,
Huacai Chen

Thanks for your recommendation.

It's my pleasure to take this duty if I'm eligible.

I have experience in MIPS chips and have already involved in some review processes.
i.e.loongson, Ingenic/MediaTec & etc.

As what Huacai has said, I'm a pure contributor from community,
which means I will able to be neutral
to MIPS family members.

[Also added Yunqiang Su to Cc list as he is the
only current MIPS company employee I know.]

Thanks.

I'd like to jump in as MIPS maintainer. I'm doing Linux MIPS kernel
development since ages (started with an Olivetti M700 and kernel version
2.x) and right now time for doing the jobs isn't issue:-)

It is a great news that you are willing to act as maintainer as Linux-MIPS.

I noticed that you are mainly working some old machines.
And recently years, there are some new machines from Ingenic, Loongson, MTK etc.
MIPS Inc also have some MIPSr6 IPs.
I think that you need some of these machines.

In the last years, we see that the single maintainer is not enough as people may
quite busy.
Do you think that we need co-maintainers?

I can provide some new Ingenic platform machines as a gift to Thomas.
Ingenic X1000 can be provided in a short time, it has been directly
supported by kernel 5.6.
X1830 and X2000 will be available later.

Paul Cercueil also has interest about it. That's so cool.

As a suggestion, I think that we can have a maintainers team:

Option1: Paul Cercueil/Thomas Bogendoerfer/Jiaxun Yang
Option2: Thomas Bogendoerfer/Paul Cercueil/Jiaxun Yang

any idea?

background:
1. PaulC works lots for Ingenic support.
2. Thomas works lots for some SGI IP and some other hardware
3. Jiaxun works lots for Loongson hardware.

How about the three maintainer have equal rights but different emphasis.
They can jointly maintain the common code parts, and they all have the
veto power
to ensure that new changes will not affect other platforms. And they can
have a
greater say in their respective focus departments, because each
maintainer has
corresponding hardware in hand, which can ensure that the code is tested
and
can run correctly.

BTW, as a developer of the Ingenic platform, I can donate the hardware
of the
Ingenic platform to the other two maintainers so that any one of the
three maintainer
can effectively verify the code of the Ingenic platform.

sure, it would be helpfull. And with a reasonable price I have no problem
buying a new machine. But IMHO it's not mandatory for a maintainer
to have all supported hardware available.

> In the last years, we see that the single maintainer is not enough as

> Do you think that we need co-maintainers?

Looking at the number of patches in arch/mips for the last few
release cylces we were always in the range of 100-150 commits.
So I don't see a need for a co-maintainer, but having backup
maintainer(s) is a good thing.

For me maintaining means

- keep MIPS archicture alive (legacy and newer stuff)
- collecting patches and integrating them into a git tree for pulling
- send pull requests to Linus in a timely manner
- review/comment patches
- give guidance on how to do abstractions inside MIPS arch code

Some personal background

- doing Linux/MIPS coding since 1995
- worked as system architect for OS development with MIPS 4kec, 24k, 34k
  based embedded systems
- working now for SUSE in kernel network driver area (with enough time
  for other open source projects)

Hi,

So I think Thomas is the best candidate to be maintainer, since he has
both experience and free time ;)

I'm sort-of the maintainer for the Ingenic platform and drivers, if
Jiaxun wants to do the same for Loongson hardware, that would make
Thomas' job easier. Having three co-maintainers with equal rights would
be a total mess.

Sure. I'm still going to take care Loongson code.
Probably we can help with reviewing MIPS common code too.

You might want to add yourself a R: entry in MAINTAINERS, to be listed
as designated reviewer on the Ingenic patches.
(Similarly for Jiaxun with Loongson).
