This was a bad design decision a long time back, but we are stuck with it. We have the _label attribute today that is the preferred route forwards for new drivers but we can't touch the old ones however annoying it might be. Jonathan

Well, the commit message says that I'm adding a mechanism to disable the feature. If it was actually doing anything else (like actually disabling it for any attribute) then I'd mention it in the commit message. I don't see how that possibly can be a ABI breakage. -Paul

You're missing the point here. This patchset only adds a new channel attribute and doesn't change anything else. The "label" is good to have, but that doesn't help me in any way. I have read the patch first and my impression was that we are going to disable *existing* attributes, reading the complete series suggests it's not true.
