The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.

The function mtu3_remove() can only return a non-zero value if
ssusb->dr_mode is neiter USB_DR_MODE_PERIPHERAL nor USB_DR_MODE_HOST nor
USB_DR_MODE_OTG. In this case however the probe callback doesn't succeed
and so the remove callback isn't called at all. So the code branch
resulting in this error path could just be dropped were it not for the
compiler choking on "enumeration value 'USB_DR_MODE_UNKNOWN' not handled
in switch [-Werror=switch]". So instead replace this code path by a
WARN_ON and then mtu3_remove() be converted to return void trivially.

Just to evaluate the options, I tried with a BUG_ON(ssusb->dr_mode ==

case label for this value.

I think a warning is a good idea as today that case cannot happen
(unless I missed something) and if it still happened, you'd want to know
as the handling is insufficient then. And I also think that if the enum
usb_dr_mode should ever be expanded, this code location should be
revisited, so the explicit "case USB_DR_MODE_UNKNOWN" is better in my
opinion.

As you suggest this variant you seem to have some upside in mind, didn't
put it into your message though. Would you share your thoughts?

Huh, printing out an loud error message was my intention. It's news to
me that WARN_ON() reboots the machine?! I thought BUG_ON() was the one
with the effects you describe that I shouldn't use.

panic-on-warn is set for zillions[1] of Linux systems out there, so systems
will reboot.

[1] Unofficial number, I know the "cloud" systems set this, as well as
    all of Samsung's phone kernels, a non-trivial amount of Linux
    instances in the wild.

The people enabling panic-on-warn *ask* for a reboot if something
strange happens, right? If ssusb->dr_mode is USB_DR_MODE_UNKNOWN in
.remove() but wasn't in .probe(), that's strange, right? If I don't
enable panic-on-warn, my system just emits a warning and then the driver
copes with what it has, right? Sounds to me as if WARN_ON does exactly
what is the right thing here.

I really don't want to add more WARN_ON() to the kernel if at all
possible.

If this "can not happen" then just don't even add code for it, why have
this at all?  The compiler warning can be handled a different way,
right?

Sure, what do you suggest? A dev_warn()?
