But does feel pretty hacky to need to align based on some ancient thing.

It just needs the space, should not matter otherwise. But may as well just add the union and align the freeptr so it stop complaining on m68k.

Kees added the: s->offset = ALIGN_DOWN(s->object_size / 2, sizeof(void *)); so maybe he had something else in mind. But I suspect it was just because the code already used it elsewhere.
