You're instead making it depend on only the intermediate files we msgcat from it. What I was going for was to detect that non-ASCII issue, which your version will also do, but out of general paranoia I thought running it thorugh the same toolchain and produce the end result made sense. So if there's any issue that the msgcat that produces po.git would spot we'll miss it here, but I don't know of any such problem.
